Journey to Marleybone (Pt. 2: Saving Sally)

JourneytoMB Part 2

So, we left off with me having to defeat 10 Armada ships. Check!

After that, I had to do the equivalent of breaking into the Governor’s Mansion: Dreadnaught Regal. After defeating three rounds of clockworks and blowing up lots of Powder Kegs, I was back out. The next thing Catbeard told me to do was the biggie: Fort Elena. Fort Elena, if you don’t know already, is the heavily guarded prison of the Marleybonians, which happens to be storing Mustang Sally and Napoleguin. Ka-ching! So I broke in, learned a new ability or two, and fought some Redcoat guards.

Check! After that I kind of had to find Sally. Or Napoleguin. Or both. First I met some other prisoners that I may…

…or may not have seen previously.

Is he a Phule or something? 😉 Finally I fought more Redcoats, some Armada, more Redcoats. (This is a long, if repetitive, dungeon. Dungeon as in instance and in dungeon.) I found Sally. Armada. Napoleguin. Fancy cell, eh?

So much for being in jail. I broke him out and fought about 3 more rounds of Armada while heading out for a breath of fresh air. I finally finished the dungeon and went back to Catbeard. He thanked me for following his/Napoleguin’s plan and sent me off to the town of Tumbleweed. Yay for being back in Cool Ranch!

Journey to Marleybone (Pt.1: Port Regal)

JourneytoMB Part 1

You know how I was in Port Regal, right? Well, I’m still in Port Regal. I don’t like having to defeat 10 Marleybone ships. It’s tedious and they always gang up on me. Grr… After I finally finished defeating those ships, I reported back to Catbeard.

He told me that Marleybone was annoyed, but that we need them furious. He told me that taking the governor’s daughter would anger Marleybone. To get to Mabel, I needed to break in to the Governor’s Mansion. I flew over to Port Regal to learn how from Gilbert and Sullivan. They told me about a secret entrance around the side of the house, and that I would be able to go through the sewer and get to the cellar. Why are us pirates always going through cellars? 😉

I fought an admiral down in the sewer (why was he down there?) and then headed up into the secret entrance. The house was actually quite pretty, and no one seemed to notice me in there.

Main entrance, but I came out of the kitchen. Figures.

Upstairs balcony. Is it just me, or does that painting on the right seem like it could be a potential tapestry/painting teleporter to Wolfminster Abbey? After I brought Mabel back to Catbeard, apparently he was satisfied… With Marleybone. Now I had to “do the same thing to the Armada.” To be continued in Journey to Marleybone Part 2: Saving Sally!

History Applied in Pirate101

I was reading through the Pirate101 forums, and I saw one of the Frogfather’s posts asking what players’ favorite quests were.  I was about to reply to this post, thinking about my favorite quests, and I love how Pirate101’s quests are intertwined with real-life history. I saw one other writer had already posted about this:

One of my absolute favorite things about Pirate101 are all of the in-jokes and references like Banditoads = Banditos, Frogerales = Federales, etc. I love how creative the developers have been in mixing fantasy with the real life and almost every one, if not all, of the bounty hunting fights is targeted at a reference to some great western or bandit movie.

I did some research and found a few references.

The Presidio-

A Spanish fort established in areas [that was or thought to be] under their control. These fortresses were used to farm and store goods, served as missions, and housed soldiers for protection against pirates, enemy colonists, and other hostiles.

We see this applied to Pirate101 as a Monquistan fort that is used to store goods. We fight soldiers the soldiers inside while we’re trying to take the spices for the Frogfather.

Port Regal-

Portugal. Portugal has a long-standing alliance with England- dating back to the 1300s! Wow!

It’s only logic that Marleybonian soldiers are housed in Port Regal during this time of war (with Marleybone having a very powerful navy.)

Santa Rana-

[Antonio Lopez de] Santa Anna was on a quest to dominate North America. He set up corrupt governments and tried to rule the Americas.

Santa Rana, in Pirate101, is portrayed similarly to how he actually acted, using forces that were supposed to be “right” to do his evil bidding.

There’s much more so have fun looking for history in Pirate101 on your own! 🙂

What If: Ratbeard Escaped?

What_If

The first “What If?’ post is here! The topic is: What if Ratbeard Escaped the Water Moles?

Picture 2013-01-25 16-22-38

Nearing the end of Chapter 1 (take a look here if you don’t know what that is), you are set to find Captain Gunn’s will, which Ratbeard has stolen! You sail after him, and end up at a volcano. What now? You run up the volcano only to find he was captured by the Water Moles. (At least he didn’t escape!) But what would happen… If the Water Moles didn’t capture him?

Yes, this is another screenshot of the volcano. Our quest goals are as follows for “Into the Fire“:

  • Explore Volcano Entrance
  • Explore Volcano Summit
  • Defeat Chumba Wumba
  • Talk to Chumba Wumba

Of course, we see Ratbeard. We rescue him. But now… Ratbeard’s not there! (Just so you can tell, the added lines have red compasses on the side.)

Quest-Into the Fire-Dialogue 1

As you can see, you skip, er, 6 books. We’re less than level 10 here, not over level 25. Plus, you’re not here for Mustang Sally anymore, you’re here for Ratbeard. Continuing on…

Quest-Dialogue-2

…and in not too much time, we learn about Napoleguin. Back on track, more or less. Actually, way less. We still need to finish book two. I assume from here, if the storyline was rendered like this, we wouldn’t head through the worlds in the “normal” order, Skull Island ➜ Monquista ➜ Valencia ➜ Cool Ranch ➜ Skull Island ➜ Cool Ranch ➜ MooShu. Instead of finding Mustang Sally, Catbeard might be helping you find Ratbeard. You bust him out of prison along with Mustang Sally and Napoleguin, then you follow Mustang Sally to Cool Ranch. Who knows if you would ever go to Valencia or Monquista. You would probably go to MooShu next, which is the end of our current storyline!

I hope you liked the first post in this series, thanks for reading!
